Physio For Muscle Strains

Physiotherapy can be very beneficial for treating muscle strains. When an injured muscle experiences a muscle tear or sprain, it can greatly benefit from physiotherapy treatment. Here at Head2Toe Carrigaline during your session, our physiotherapist will assess the severity of the injury, whether it’s an acute or chronic injury, and create a personalised rehabilitation program to help the muscle heal. This may involve working on a range of motion, strengthening exercises, and recovery time

Symptoms Of A Muscle Tear

Symptoms of a muscle tear can include sudden and severe muscle pain, a bruise at the injured area, muscle tightness, and a large lump of muscle tissue. Additionally, you may experience a tendon or ligament compression and a noticeable reduction in muscle strength. When a torn muscle occurs, the contraction of the muscle can be extremely painful and you may have difficulty moving the affected limb. Strains include quadriceps muscle strain injuries and hamstring muscle strain injuries, which can lead to pain-free movement for only a few minutes at a time. It is important to book an appointment with a physiotherapist to properly diagnose and begin the treatment of a muscle injury.

  • Swelling
  • Bruising or redness
  • Aching pain at rest in the acute phrase
  • An increase in pain when the muscle is being used
  • Significant lost of strength when affected muscle is contracting to complete a task

How Do Physiotherapists Treat Muscles Tears?

Here at Head2Toe, our physiotherapists will treat muscle tears by first assessing the severity of the injury. Depending on the grade of the tear, the treatment process varies. For a grade I tear, which is a small tear with minimal damage within the muscle tissue, the rehabilitation process may focus on stretching and strengthening the affected muscle groups. This may also include gentle muscle work to help promote healing and regain range of motion. For a grade II or grade III tear, which involves a more significant and severe muscle strain, the approach to treatment may be more intensive. This could involve an acute muscle injury program focusing on reducing pain and swelling, and gradually progressing to regaining strength and function. The immediate treatment for a severe muscle strain may also include measures to protect the area and support the individual, such as using crutches if they are unable to walk or providing braces or supports for the affected muscle. The rehab program may also focus on promoting a pain-free sensation in the muscle and supporting the healing stage of the muscle.

Different Types Of Muscle Strains

Muscle strains can range from mild to severe, typically categorised as grade 1, grade 2, or grade 3. Grade 1 consists of muscle fibres being stretched, grade 2 involves more extensive damage with partial muscle fibres being torn, and grade 3 means the muscle is completely torn. Regardless of the severity, it’s important to seek out physiotherapy to properly treat and strengthen the muscle.
