Dry Needling Treatment

At Head2Toe in Carrigaline, in addition to chiropractic care and physiotherapy, we offer dry needling treatments to our clients. Dry needling is a technique used to treat trigger points in muscles. During treatment, one or more thin needles are inserted into the affected muscle. Trigger points are local bands of tight, irritable, and dysfunctional muscle tissue that can occur due to injury, overuse, or poor movement patterns. Clients will often report immediate relief after a dry needling treatment, as it can decrease muscle tightness, increase blood flow, and reduce pain in the affected area. By combining dry needling with other therapies, such as chiropractic care and physiotherapy, we can provide a comprehensive approach to addressing our clients’ musculoskeletal issues and injuries.

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a therapeutic technique used to treat muscle pain and stiffness. It involves the insertion of thin filiform needles into the muscle tissue to target trigger points or areas of tension. Unlike traditional acupuncture, dry needling does not manipulate the flow of energy or qi in the body, but instead focuses on releasing muscle knots and improving blood flow to the affected area. The needles used in dry needling are typically much finer than those used in acupuncture, and they are inserted directly into the myofascial trigger points, causing a local twitch response in the muscle. This twitch response helps to release muscle tension and promote healing. Dry needling has been shown to be an effective treatment for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, including chronic pain, sports injuries, and muscle strains. It is often used in conjunction with other physical therapy techniques to help improve range of motion and reduce pain.

Musculoskeletal Pain And Areas Dry Needling Can Help

Musculoskeletal pain is a common condition that affects the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones in the body. It can cause discomfort, stiffness, and reduced mobility in affected areas. Dry needling is often used for treating many musculoskeletal conditions such as the below. This treatment involves inserting thin needles into trigger points within the muscles to release tension, improve blood flow, and relieve pain. Many patients find dry needling to be an effective and minimally invasive way to manage their musculoskeletal pain and improve their quality of life. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional to determine if dry needling is a suitable treatment option for your specific condition.

What is musculoskeletal pain?

Musculoskeletal pain refers to discomfort or pain that affects the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and bones in the body. This type of pain can be acute or chronic and is often caused by overuse, injury, or strain on the musculoskeletal system. Common examples of musculoskeletal pain include lower back pain, neck pain, and shoulder pain. The pain can be localised to a specific area or can be more widespread, affecting multiple parts of the body. Musculoskeletal pain can also be a symptom of underlying conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, or osteoporosis. It can range from mild to severe and may be accompanied by swelling, stiffness, and limited range of motion. Treatment for musculoskeletal pain may include rest, physical therapy, medication, and in some cases, surgery. Managing musculoskeletal pain requires a comprehensive approach that addresses both the physical discomfort and the underlying causes.

What causes musculoskeletal pain?

Musculoskeletal pain can be caused by a variety of factors, including injury, overuse, or underlying conditions such as arthritis or fibromyalgia. Acute injuries, such as strains or sprains, can result in immediate pain and inflammation in the affected area. Chronic overuse of muscles and joints, often due to repetitive movements or poor posture, can also lead to musculoskeletal pain over time. Additionally, conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia can cause ongoing pain and discomfort in the muscles and joints. Other potential causes of musculoskeletal pain include fractures, dislocations, and structural abnormalities in the bones or soft tissues. In some cases, musculoskeletal pain may also be referred to as pain from another source, such as a pinched nerve or internal organ issues. Overall, musculoskeletal pain can stem from a wide range of sources, making it important to seek proper diagnosis and treatment from a healthcare professional.

Yvonne is a miracle worker! I was in pain for months with lower back pain and nothing was working--went to Yvonne at Head to Toe and over time she has made my pain manageable and most days non-existent! She listened to me and we worked out a plan that included me getting back to the gym and getting off pain killers, and so far its working out brilliantly! I can actually move again and enjoy my life which frankly, didn't seem possible 6 months ago...I cannot recommend Yvonne highly enough-Thank you!

I had my first session yesterday! After years of injuring my back while working I’ve had masseuses refuse to touch it out of fear of damaging my back even more. I’ve had numbness in my arm, terrible sleeping patterns and my lower back locks up very often. Out of fear, I was nervous to try acupuncture but Nayna was so calm and made the process very relaxing. She took all the time she needed, clicking and relieving my back, neck, arms, pelvis and legs. I slept like a baby last night for the first time in ages! My back was so inflamed and I can now feel the instant relief after going only once. It is costly but so so worth it (in my opinion the expense of going to many cheaper places adds up and doesn’t have the same effect). I’m able to go about my day pain free and I’m not even taking any pain killers or anti inflammatories, I feel amazing! Thank you Nayna X

Not only did he help alleviate symptoms he also gave me the tools and skills to ensure that I wont end up in the same place again. Thanks to Barry, I now have a much better understanding of my body and how it works and how to take care of it. Finally he's a lovely guy and completely put me at my ease.

More FAQs On Dry Needling

Dry Needling Benefits

Dry needling is a technique that physical therapists use to treat muscle pain and stiffness. It involves inserting thin needles into specific trigger points in the muscles, which helps to release tension and improve blood flow to the area. This can lead to reduced pain and improved range of motion. Dry needling has been shown to be effective in treating conditions such as chronic pain, muscle spasms, and sports injuries. Additionally, it can help alleviate symptoms of conditions like fibromyalgia and tension headaches. The benefits of dry needling also include improved muscle function and strength, as well as faster recovery from injuries. Many patients report feeling immediate relief after a dry needling session, and the effects tend to be long-lasting with regular treatment. Overall, dry needling is a valuable tool for physical therapists in addressing a variety of musculoskeletal issues and improving the overall well-being of their patients.

Dry Needling VS Acupuncture

Dry needling and acupuncture are two distinct forms of treatment, with their own unique approaches and goals. Dry needling is a relatively new practice that focuses on treating musculoskeletal and neuromuscular pain by targeting and releasing trigger points in dysfunctional muscles. On the other hand, acupuncture is an ancient Chinese practice that aims to restore the flow of energy, or qi, in the body by inserting thin needles at specific points along the body’s meridian pathways. Despite their differences, there are some similarities between the two treatments. Both involve the use of thin needles inserted at various depths to treat symptoms, and the healthcare professional may also gently move or manipulate the needles after placement. Additionally, both acupuncture and dry needling are considered safe treatments and are often integrated into larger treatment plans. These treatments are widely embraced by individuals practising conventional or Western medicine and can be effective in managing a variety of health conditions.

What Does Dry Needling Do

Dry needling is a technique used by physical therapists to treat myofascial pain and trigger points. The goal of dry needling is to relieve pain and improve muscle function by releasing tight knots of muscle fibres. This can help to improve flexibility, reduce muscle tension, and enhance overall movement and function. Additionally, the process can also stimulate the body’s natural healing process, increasing blood flow to the affected areas and promoting the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers.
